PLANTING & SPACING

How Many Plants Fit in a Raised Bed?

Plant capacity is a geometry question only after a suitable spacing has been chosen. The calculator counts complete spacing cells; the Plant Library supplies horticultural context.

The complete-cell model

For an even grid, divide length and width by the same spacing, round each count down, then multiply. For rows, apply plant spacing along the row and row spacing across it.

Worked example

Even grid8 ft × 4 ft at 12 in
  1. Convert the bed to 96 in × 48 in.
  2. floor(96 ÷ 12) = 8 cells long.
  3. floor(48 ÷ 12) = 4 cells wide.
  4. 8 × 4 = 32 complete cells.

What the count does not prove

A complete cell is not a claim about plant health, yield, or suitability. Use a crop- and method-specific source first; tomato, lettuce, and cucumber guidance demonstrates why one universal number would be misleading. [1][2][3]
