GARDEN PLANNING

How to Plan a Raised Bed Garden

A useful raised-bed plan connects the space around the bed with the growing area inside it. Work from the site outward: access, dimensions, crops, spacing, and material volume.

1. Map the site and access

Mark the bed and paths before buying materials. Oregon State advises choosing a width that lets the gardener reach the center and leaving walkways that fit the equipment that will use them. [1]

2. Choose usable inside dimensions

Record the growing length and width inside the frame. Keep path clearance and frame thickness out of the planting-area calculation.

3. Select crops before fixing the layout

Review the Plant Library for crop-specific spacing and method context. Decide whether supports, rows, or a grid change the space allocation.

4. Estimate soil and save the bed

Assess the native soil and drainage before choosing a fill approach; Extension guidance treats good native soil, compacted soil, and hard surfaces as different cases. [2]

Calculate the remaining fill volume, then save the bed dimensions locally in My Garden so they can be reused across calculators.
