FREE GARDEN CALCULATOR

Mulch Calculator

Estimate mulch for rectangular garden beds, flower beds and landscaped areas. Compare bulk volume, whole bags and an optional purchase buffer.

YOUR COVERAGE AREA

Enter your dimensions

Measurement system

Values convert when you switch systems.

areas

Use this for several beds with the same dimensions.

Purchase buffer

Optional. A buffer can help allow for uneven ground, measurement differences and variations in applied depth.

Buying bagged mulch?
Bag unit

Presets are convenient examples. Actual product bag sizes vary, so check the volume printed on the bag you plan to buy.

MEASURE THE AREA. CHOOSE THE DEPTH.

How much mulch do I need?

Measure the length and width of the area, then enter the depth you intend to apply. The calculator converts mixed units, multiplies identical areas and presents both bulk and bagged purchasing estimates.

  1. 01

Measure the rectangular area’s length and width.

  2. 02

Choose the mulch depth for your specific material and project.

  3. 03

Add the number of identical areas, if there is more than one.

  4. 04

Compare the base volume with optional bag and buffer estimates.

How to calculate mulch volume

First calculate the surface area by multiplying length by width. Convert the intended depth to the same length unit, then multiply the area by that depth. For identical beds, multiply the volume of one bed by the number of beds.

Mulch calculation formula

Rectangular coveragelength × width × depth × areas

Grownestia normalizes every dimension before multiplication, retains precision through the calculation and rounds only the displayed result.

Worked example

Garden bed12 ft × 6 ft × 3 in

1 3 inches ÷ 12 = 0.25 feet.

2 12 × 6 × 0.25 = 18 cubic feet.

3 18 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.67 cubic yards.

4 With 10% added ≈ 0.73 cubic yards.

How deep should I enter mulch in the calculator?

Enter the depth you actually intend to apply. The appropriate depth depends on the material, purpose, existing conditions and project. Product or supplier guidance should take precedence over a general example, and existing mulch may reduce the new volume required.

Buying mulch in bags

Bag volumes vary. Select a liter or cubic-foot preset, or enter the exact custom volume printed on your product. Purchasing estimates always round up because a fraction of a bag is not normally purchasable.

Buying mulch by the cubic yard

Bulk mulch is often sold by cubic yard or cubic meter. The result preserves the calculated decimal volume and does not assume a retailer’s order increment. Check how your supplier measures, sells and delivers bulk material.

1 cubic yard27 cubic feet
1 cubic foot28.316846592 liters
1 cubic meter1,000 liters

Should I include extra mulch?

A small optional buffer may help account for uneven ground, measurement differences and variations in applied depth. The calculator keeps this separate from the required geometric volume because no buffer is universally required.

Common mulch calculation mistakes

  • Multiplying feet by inches before converting the depth.
  • Using the full bed height instead of the intended mulch depth.
  • Forgetting to multiply one bed’s volume by the number of identical beds.
  • Assuming every bag or bulk supplier uses the same selling increment.
  • Treating a strongly irregular area as an exact rectangle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much mulch I need?

Multiply the area length by its width and the mulch depth after converting all measurements to compatible units. Multiply that volume by the number of identical areas, if applicable.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard contains exactly 27 cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to convert a volume to cubic yards.

How many bags of mulch do I need?

Divide the required volume by the volume printed on one bag, then round up to the next whole bag. The calculator does this for liter and cubic-foot bag sizes.

Should I buy extra mulch?

A small optional buffer may help with uneven ground, measurement differences or variations in applied depth. No percentage is right for every project, so compare the base and buffered estimates.

Can I calculate mulch for multiple flower beds?

Yes. Enter the dimensions of one bed and set Number of identical areas to the number of beds with those same dimensions.

Can I use centimeters and meters?

Yes. Switch to Metric and use meters or centimeters for each measurement. The physical dimensions stay the same when switching systems.
